I am beginning to loathe the boutique pedal scene.

The fact that anyone could get so defensive about an idea that they not only obviously did not come up with out of thin air but is essentially very simple baffles me

Is this another guy bitching about me cloning his clone of a clone that has mods that have been around for 50 years?

shame on you Keith, you should try coming up with something original like everyone else...instead of stealing everyone else's original ideas. (yes, that's sarcasm).

Its like Donald Trump demanding a nickel every time someone says "You're Fired"

Yeah. Presumably invented the concept of blend, and you'd think he'd coined the word and invented the five letters that make it up, too.

if you are finding it hard to pick a fight dan-o, you just aren't trying hard enough, now go back there and tell him that his mother was a hamster and his father smelt of elderberry and if that is not enough threaten to fart in his general direction

I love BYOC even more just because of people like that. Its sort of funny to see people act like it is ok to clone somebody else, but nobody can clone you.

I had no idea that my assigned pedal was going to be so "controversial".

I have never used a Tone Press, I am sure that it is a good pedal because it seems to have its followers, but IMO, this guy has no real argument at all.

I was hoping for a proper dust-up, but Dave appears to be too reasonable.

I get really miffed when folks come down on BYOC. Keith's business has done more to demystify pedals and make them approachable for thousands of DIY builders than anyone else out there. The growth and success of BYOC and the amazing amount of thoughtful traffic in the forumz is proof that there is a large community out here of reasonable and curious people--people who like to build stuff and learn.

One of my best buds is the guy who runs OLCircuits. Another great kit supplier. I'll go to bat for either him or Keith any day.

Back to soldering!

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!! that's fantastic!

David Barber seems like a good guy, very intelligent. I must be missing something because I really don't get what the base issue is. I want to see it, but I don't.

And just to add in response to one of his responses, adding a motor to a bicycle is not a Harley, it's a motorcycle - which was invented decades before Harley came along and did it. Does that make Harley-Davidson immoral for starting a motorcycle company?

Great reply from you Dano, I loved reading that.

I think I see Barber's point... he's saying that the art of stealing was previously performed only by gentlemen thiefs like him, and now the thiefs are just thugs like us.

The idea of adding a blend circuit to a compressor is very old, but as he was the first one to think of doing it in a simple stompbox, he would like to be the only one doing it, since it was his idea... I'm sure he's a very nice guy, and if the claim wasn't so obviously silly and out of touch with reality, I would have supported him.

See but if only Keith had paid him a licence and used the Barber name, everything would've been okay - now that's one BIG ego! A nice-guy ego, but very very BIG.

My favorite part is that someone said it's in bad taste to sell a clone of a boutique pedal. Would it make any difference if we were building Boss DS-1's? I see what Kieth does as extremely different from boutique builders. He basically says, I could start a business like all the others and try my hardest to sell you a tubescreamer for around $200. However, the market is flooded with that. Instead, I'll sell you parts and let you do it yourself. It's called an open market.

Guyatone TC-X had a blend knob, called shape. At the latest it came out in May 2002, but possibly earlier, there isn't much out there about it.

(sorry for the double post)

another thing, barber in the thread at tgp, clearly mentions that his "blend" function requires extra circuitry on top of the ross compressor. in the ebay auction, the description clearly states: "The blend circuit is an original byoc design that was engineered around the 2SC1849 transistors rather than your typical IC based blend circuit. So instead of hacking in additional circuitry, the byoc blend circuit fits seamlessly with the theme and tone of the original circuit."

so nya!

No. The byoc compressor does require extra circuitry for the blend feature. All of the blend circuits I have ever seen have been IC based. It would have been very easy to take some pre-existing blend circuit and add it to the ross, but I though it would be much cooler to use transistors. Q6 and Q7 on the schematic.

I don't know what's in the barber blend circuit. The rhetoric says something about it being class A and phase correct. So who knows? IMO, the blend knob is the least interesting of all the new features on compressor kit yet the one that gets the most attention....even before the TGP fiasco. It's still a very useful feature. I think the tone knob is the most useful new feature. The Ross circuit certainly needed one and this tone knob feels and sounds so natural. And I think adding the "universal" transistor sockets is something that the guys who source their own parts will really appreciate having. And a PCB design that can accept either the CA3080 or BA6110. C'mon....how cool is that. That actually took a bit of work to pull off.

Good work chief. If you are excited about it, I'm sure it's that it's gonna be special.
