I've been listening to a lot of Red (LOVE them End of Silence is AMAZING) and Lacuna Coil lately (mostly just because I only have a radio in my work truck) and I have really been wanting to get that type of distortion going. Something that's not really METAL, but definitely on the edge. Kind of Hard Rock, you know? I know tone is very subjective, but to get close enough and something that I could tweak with would be great. I have a Keeley Twilight Zone mod Boss MT-2 Metal Zone, but I just can't seem to get that smooth heavy distortion (without buying an amp)

(I play a "frankenstein"-esque strat clone that has been rebuilt several times (currently SD Trem JB in the bridge and SD P-rails in the neck) and through a Peavey Classic 50.)

Any suggestions?

The Crunchbox isn't bad. The Dr. Boogie is a DIY isn't it?

Are you looking for a factory built pedal or a DIY?

No preference except for the sound itself. I may not be pro, but I can build pedals ok. I don't want to spend a ton of money though...

Culture Jam, a member here, is offering the Inline8 overdrive wich is almost a distortion.

Similar to Marshall Guv'nor or Lovepedal Super Lead, it's like playing in 80's spandex stack!

I have'nt built mine yet, but it's an easy built with a low part count, so sourcing them would'nt be a biggie.

That pedal seems to be really versatile, especially with the tone switch mod and added second gain control.

Tone switch, will give you a tight shred focused tone or a more «loosen» alive sound.

Pretty sure you'd be able to dial in the tone you're looking for, especially running through a tube amp.

I'd throw my weight behind the Dr Boogie. That pedal makes an incredibly satisfying chunk of heavy noise.

Metal muff is awesome too if you turn down the gain!

Not sure what the Madbean version is. I think Barry at Guitar PCB is selling an updated layout called the Boogie '77 or something like that.

Well, I definitely have some research and testing to do. I listened to the Dr. Boogie. I like that. But I am going to keep looking as well.

Don't forget that hi-gain distortion also requires an industrial strength noise gate.

The BYOC Shredder is an excellent pedal to have on the board for Med-Heavy Distortion. Also, the Dr. Boogie is a beast. http://www.guitarpcb.com has a version called the boogie '57 that uses different JFets and is a bit easier to bias correctly. The typical DBoog uses a set of J201 and getting them to bias correctly can be a bit of a pain (I went through 20 J201's just to find 5 that sounded great in my Dboog). But once you get it right, boom it is a distortion monster.

From the videos I have seen, I am definitely leaning a bit towards the Boogie, but I might look into the Boogie '57 as the farthest I have ever gotten as a DIY pedal builder is BYOC's stuff, so one that's a little bit easier would definitely be a good thing. I have never had to bias anything before so that will be fun... It might still be a little while before I get around to doing one. I (being a lefty guitarist) just ordered an Eastwood Lefty Classic 6 Deluxe (with Bigsby!), so money-wise, might be set back a little bit for a bit...

Also, looking around the other day, I found a video... Anyone here ever mess around with the JHS Charlie Brown or Angry Charlie?

JHS doesn't like to rock the boat when introducing new circuits, so to speak.....

The Charlie Brown is a BSIAB...Brown Sound In A Box.

The Angry Charlie is a Crunchbox.

Should find plenty of info on building either one all over the place....... like JHS did.

Or Barry's Boogey 57. Which reminds me that mine needs troubleshooting.
