We've all been there. That ill-advised cover song. That band that you didn't really like, but had nothing else going on. That song you wrote and recorded thinking it ruled, but now realize..Oh, Crap!.

Thought it would be funny. Give a bit of background and let the cringing and laughing fight it out.

Here's mine.

Helped a friend of mine make his "singer-songwriter" solo album in 1998. And this is what happens when 3 white boys from NYC who dig 80s hard rock, metal, indie, new wave, powerpop and punk try to get jazzy. Hell, I even took my limited piano/keys skills and tried to comp some jazz riffs. Terrible:

http://soundcloud.com/dcountry13/tied-to-the-rails

On a side note, I do like this one...a cover of The Knack's That's What The Little Girls Do (even if i hate the mix):

Wow, no one. You guys are either....

Lucky to never had the pleasure of making bad music

Or

Smart enough to never have record it

Or

Too cowardly to admit it

Or

Too weak-stomached to listen to it again.

Well, you can make fun of mine, if you wish.

I've certainly recorded some pretty terrible stuff. I was only 17, we did one song in the college's studio and it was bleak. The videos of us live (someone else's college project) were similarly shameful. I'll see if I have the recording still. I might just pretend I don't have it any more, because it's pretty dire.

Also, it's so cheap to record stuff at home now that I bet half the posters on this forum have been involved in some pretty appalling stuff. I mean musically. I don't mean whatever other strange stuff the beard wielders around here get up to.

I'm very interested in seeing what turns up!

I spent some time last night trying to track down the "didn't bother to load these into iTunes" box of CDs but couldn't find it. Must be in my storage room, so I'll keep digging. In particular, I'd love to find an EP that I did in college with a band called Zardoz (named after that terrible Sean Connery movie). The tunes were all orchestral quotes played by a metal band with lyrics ripped from bad movies. Oh, and I was playing drums.

You forgot one:

Has never made any music of any kind...thus I can say I've never recorded any bad music whatsoever 8)

I'm not pulling up Soundcloud this morning. Must be an issue on my end. I was looking forward to some crappy music from some guys here. Maybe it will make me feel better.

Yes, dig them out and post.....I want to hear this crap!

I do have real basement quality tapes/demos and stuff that could easily scare off some listeners, but I posted something that "should" have been better. Honestly, didn't all our first bands suck at 17 years old after 5 months of lessons?

I would normally love to add some embarrassing tracks to this mix, but you have to add another option:

The hard drive with all your old recordings and demos died.

That just leaves us with whatever we've recorded since the band's first album, which I suppose is still pretty mock-worthy depending on your tastes!

 I do almost every night.....just ask my wife. She asked me the other night, do you have to play the same stuff over and over. I responded with, "well how do you define practice?" I usually give her the muscle memory speech.

Ok, I'll try.. first off, I have much worse stuff, it's just stuck on archived media like ADATS, DAT tapes, reel-to-reel, etc. You should hear my 90's techno/industrial project, that would be comedy gold..

But for now, you can have a listen to this: Steven Colbert had a Christmas Special a number of years back, and John Legend did a naughty Christmas soul song called 'Nutmeg'. I thought it was hysterical, and decided to record a version of it just to see if I was capable of 'soul singing'. Turns out.. not enough to really fool anyone. Oh and totally NSFW.
Nutmeg

Rob, you need to dig deeper. I think you set the bar too high, it wasn't bad enough. If you find something a little worse, I'll make an effort to dig up the techno/industrial music.

Eric, challenge accepted. Remember, my band right after college, Wildcat Transistor Outfit, played an all-new style of music we invented...."Shit Rock". I will have to figure out the best way to get the cassette recordings and our 7" single uploaded.

I will check out "Nutmeg" later. Sounds like it sounds terrible.

At least you aclnowledge it has some level of vomit-inducing putridness. Finally.......

People, this stuff is bad. If it is posted in this thread, the creator already knows its bad, so blast away with the harsh judgements....that's why we are here. Oh, and to laugh.

It was 1980 something, and I shudder at the thought of all the great gear we kids had, and did not appreciate. The lead player had a Fender Jag and some kind of sweet blackface, I was playing decent gear.

Anyway, the lead player bought a BMP, and we wrote a song about it. On a reel to reel.

The lyrics were NSFW.

V-C-V-C-C(at double-speed, cause we figured out how to do that).

There was a moaning, fake climax, ala Robert Plant, done by me, to finish the song.

At 2x speed, I sounded alot like a mouse with a helmet busting a nut!

You want bad? Oh man - I've made tons and tons on top of tons of horrendous stuff ... like - real bad! My only defense is that I usually never thought it rocked ... I am my own worst critic and usually I'm spot on!! I'm typically at the height of suck whenever I try to write a song "with feeling" since I am pretty horrible and expressing emotions and such and I usually go way overboard on sap to make up for that.

Anyway, it was fun finding these and going through them - most of this stuff was from when I first started writing and recording, and I was basically brand new to playing and "singing" then too, so while I'm no master now, I've gotten better!

Forgive me for what you are about to hear, but here's a rundown of some of the suck I could find hanging out on my web server:

Motor Psycho - haulin' ass! http://www.nagodadesign.com/robdog/Astr ... Psycho.mp3

Spinning - I think this takes the cake as the worst thing ever ... can't believe I ever thought this would work since I can't write this kind of song, can't sing, and can't play piano, etc.. - http://www.nagodadesign.com/robdog/Astr ... inning.mp3

Do What You Do - no idea ... trying to experiment a bit? No excuse, set suckgun to "kill" - http://nagodadesign.com/robdog/Astro-La ... tYouDo.mp3

Die For Me - http://www.nagodadesign.com/robdog/Astr ... eForMe.mp3

Born Slaves - heh. ha. oh lord ... http://www.nagodadesign.com/robdog/Astr ... Slaves.mp3

40 Hours - http://www.nagodadesign.com/robdog/Astr ... 0Hours.mp3

Good Mommy - in case anybody ever wondered why I'm not in a punk band, here you go: http://www.nagodadesign.com/robdog/Astr ... dMommy.mp3

The Will - a terrible, terrible song w/ violin no less, and horrible lyrics to match - http://www.astrolamb.com/songs/the-will.mp3

Not The Truth - http://www.nagodadesign.com/robdog/Astr ... eTruth.mp3

Fired Up - uh ... http://nagodadesign.com/robdog/Astrolamb_FiredUp.mp3

New Sex - http://www.nagodadesign.com/robdog/Astrolamb_NewSex.mp3

Girl - Was I listening to much White Striped at this time? I think maybe I was - http://www.nagodadesign.com/robdog/Astrolamb_Girl.mp3

Moon Shine - Pretentious? A little ... plus bonus B-movie horror piano sounds! http://www.nagodadesign.com/robdog/Astr ... Shine2.mp3

Do You Dream - But not as pretentious as this ... http://www.nagodadesign.com/robdog/Astr ... uDream.mp3

Big Disco - I should not write protest songs ... actually, this eventually turned into a cool song which my old band played, then we recorded it and it was the biggest piece of crap ever, so - you know - full circle - http://www.nagodadesign.com/robdog/Astr ... gDisco.mp3

As someone with no bad skeletons in my closet - simply because I am not good enough to record anything even approaching bad - my compliments to you for being bad in multiple genres. Well done.

PS If I was good enough to have a library of bad stuff to sift through and post the worst of it, I don't think I would have the stones to post it. So all you guys also deserve the BYOC Medal of Bravery.

On a positive note, the recording quality on some of these is pretty good.

"The Will" is actually sort of a catchy tune. Maybe all it needs is a death metal remix version. You should probably post the individual tracks so all your buddies here could remix it for you a dozen different ways. That would be kinda fun.

I don't have this stuff digitized yet, but samples of old 4-track recordings with my buddy Graham from the 90's include: a rap song about getting diarrhea from eating Grape Nuts, heavy metal kazoo solo, a Christmas song about Santa being a pedophile and going to jail, a mash-up of Indian dance music with dialogue samples from the movie "Short Circuit", a musical (written by me) about a evil genius who tries to take over the world with psychedelic peanut butter, and lots of terrible guitar solos :)

That shit sounds awesome Madbean.. also, seeing you here reminds me of my song 'Winonna Don't Marry Him' from our college days.. if I can land a copy of that, it would be a prime candidate here.

Rnagoda- I only caught two before work (how can you not listen to a song called 'New sex'?) and I will listen to more, but one thing I actually liked so far is that your voice has a bit of a Jello Biafra (Dead Kennedys) quality to it. Nice. Your track levels are all over the place though  Build a compressor.

Ha ha - I'm happy to report that no such tracks exist!! Suffice it to say, I don't count anything listed here as a "proud moment," so when it came time to make room on the hard drive, these songs were not spared (aside from the mp3)!

I'm not worried, man. The suck is self-evident!

See ... this was all done before I even knew what a compressor was ... if you guys knew how this was recorded you might be amazed, though I doubt it, but let's just say it involved the words 'soundblaster' and 'casio' among others!

And I get the "Jello" comment a good bit. At first that's all I had, and it was completely involuntary, and then it disappeared with some singing lessons I've taken since these were recorded and now I'm trying to figure out how to get some of it back ...

Yeah. I can see what you don't like, but all in all this is well-enough done. You haven't mastered "suck," my friend, which requires you to suck at the whole thing. Check out my links above, where I manage to suck at recording, mixing, singing, writing, and playing!!! That's BAD!!! :P

Serious? You need to turn your amps down, buddy, clearly your hearing is completely gone - that song is horrendous!! :P

I'm trying to find some of my rap music (yeah, for realz) and industrial music ... it may be lost forever, but I guarantee that if this was a contest and the one who sucked the worst would win, my experiments in those genres would easily take the cake!!! A few more places to look ...
