I'm giving a lecture on distortion and while I'm very knowledgable about 60's-70's guitar players and their use of fuzzboxes, I'm not into a lot of modern day music. I need some good examples of players today who use fuzzboxes. If you know which box they use, even better.

Matt Bellamy of Muse, uses a Fuzz Factory by Zvex. In fact it's pretty much the core of his distorted sound.

Other than that....

I'm pretty sure Beck uses fuzz sometimes, possibly a FOXX tone machine?

That's right, he likes it so much that he has one built into some of his guitars! It creates some truly unusual sounds as well as "standard" fuzz tones. I built a clone for my son with a Muse theme: http://www.buildyourownclone.com/board/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=35419 it's great fun.

Synyster Gates of Avenged Sevenfold uses a Frantone "The Sweet" germanium fuzz.

Joe Bonamassa has a signature Fuzz Face.

Muse!!! Completley forgot about these guys. And the whole 90's alternative-grunge scene is a given...
Thanks! That's exactly the kind of bands i'm looking for: famous and fuzzy
I'm guessing that most of the attending my lecture will be 25 yrs old and younger so I need some recent examples.
Keep em coming guys.

My ears tell me Mastodon use fuzz too. Never looked at their gear, but they have the fuzziest prog-metal tone I've ever heard.

I think Queens of the Stone Age's signature sound comes from a cranked Matchless amp... but with that said, they don't always have one signature sound, and are known to use a variety of gear, including fuzz sometimes. They do (somewhat incorrectly, IMO) get lumped in with the "stoner rock" genre, which tends to use lots of fuzz. The band Fu Manchu comes to mind - to me, every one of their songs sounds like they've got some kind of fuzz box on.

There's a lot of fuzz going on with those damn "hipsters". For example:

Silversun Pickups - pretty sure it's a Muff of some variation
M83 - zvex fuzz factory
Black Angels - muff and fuzz factory
Kurt Vile - EH graphic fuzz, muff

or even more to the point: Silversun Pickups--> whatever Smashing Pumpkins used
don't get me wrong, I like them quite a bit.. I wonder what kind of pickups they use though

I think GuitarGeek.com's Guitar Rig Database would be a good way to do just this kind of research:
http://www.guitargeek.com/category/guitar_rigs/

It's an old and sluggish website held together with duct tape, so good luck with that, but I've always loved the concept of this site.

Here's a fun example:
Johnny Greenwood of Radiohead - 1997 rig:

If you can find it, check out a documentary called Fuzz (everyone should do this BTW, awesome doc) which is all about the modern "Boutique" scene. It covers a LOT of stuff and has a lot of different musicians and bands in it. For your lecture, Wolf Mother is in it as well as, Billy Gibbons, Dweezil Zappa, J Mascus from Dinosor Jr. Josh Homme's guitar teck talks about how they used a ZVex (Cant remember if it is a SHO or Fuzz Factory?) for one of the QOTSA albums. The crazy bassist from Beck is on there.

Lots of interesting builders too, ZVex, AnalogueMan, Lots of stuff with the Death by Audio guys. Lots of crazypants moments too and some real characters. Also a ton of demos of some really old vintage fuzzes. The documentarian is the luckiest f#$ker ever.

I can't really check it out as I am at work but this link is supposed to be the full thing on Youtube.

killer movie for sure, the death by audio guys were a howl. and that tech guy was talking about a SHO from the queens album, said the "tranny was duct taped in place, like the builder knew it was gonna blow" lots of super funny moments in there, and that mike guy from EH, he seenms like a dirty bird kinda, hes got all ladies working for him lol, just weird. or that music shop owner guy, forget his name, but i laughed when he was saying all musicians are junkies, they will sell everything, and if you wanna make your shit worth more, just ebay bid it to the sky lol what a doosh

and yeah, whoever got to demo all those old fuzzes was a lucky fecker

And ya, there is some great caracters in there. The crazy guy from BJFE, woah! The EH guy has that "creepy old guy who did one too many hits of acid and stood beside the speaker stack for a few minutes too long" thing going on. The music store guy was hilarious, but too schmarmy or smug for my liking. Donner came off as a bit of a D-Bag as well. The Death By Audio guys were my fav, as well as AnalogMan and Billy Gibbons and the footage from that back room at NAAM where Bjorn was terrorizing that little girl.
