I'm slowly moving along building a guitar and I wanted to ask you guys what brand of pot you think is the most well built.

Also, I'm trying to devise a switch that would turn a 250K pot into a 500K pot, just for the difference in tone, is this even possible? Is there a 250K/500K push pull that I can't find?

I'm no expert on guitar pots, but I typically see CTS & Alpha used in guitars? I guess Bourns would be another possibility?

I think you'd want to start with a 500K pot, and cut the resistance in half with a 500K resistor in parallel across the pot lugs. At least I think that would work, I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.. it could affect the pot's taper too.. :?:

Is this the tone pot? If you're looking to alter tone, what about the tone cap?

You can easily wire up a switch to go between separately existing 250k and 500k pots. If you're not looking to have this switch permanently available in your guitar, and you're just trying to see what the difference is in feel/sound it's no issue.

CTS make a real nice 500k push/pull pot, that you dont even hear the «clicking».

I don't think you could have a pot that when you pull it it's 250k and pushed being 500k, since both use the same taper, it only serve to route the signal differently(coil tap, serie/parrallel, kill switch)

What you would need for that and i don't think it exists, is double ganged pot with 2 different taper...being push pull...., would definitly be cool if it existed...

Use the push/pull to switch a 500k resistor in/out of parallel with the 500k pot? The taper will change, but if that's acceptable, that's where I'd start.

True!! I did'nt tought of it like that....i have a push/pull 500k here...i may try that later...just to see how it work..and pass it through frequency bandwidth analyser to see how it performs :)

Funny thing is, I don't see the point. A 500K pot will have 250K resistance right near mid turn. So a 500K pot at mid point will sound like a 250K pot that is maxed out. Unless I am missing something here.

By changing the pot's value, you load the pickups differently. This coupled with the properties of the pickup creates a low pass filter. It's an impedance thing.

Wow, thanks for all the answers guys! Now, forgive my ignorance, but in parallel would be to place the resistor over lug 2 and whichever lug is not going to ground? or to place it over lugs one and three of the pot. Also. How could I set it up so that I could push/pull the pot so that it effects all the pickups at once this way? Could I just wire the pickups to both pots or would I need to put a switch in between?
