Hey all,
As you know I play bass a lot (inset joke here) and as you may also know, bass strings cost a ton. Do any of you have a good source (i.e. cheap and reliable) for strings. As long as they carry major brands I am game. Also, maybe you know a good ebay vendor?

Check for S.I.T. strings on ebay, they have some really good prices and play very well..

If you never tried those, it feels and sounds like Ernie Balls, but they last way longer!

I use them on my 7string guitar, Bass and it's the brand i use in my luthier shop!

I get my strings in bulk through juststrings.com. I've been using them for probably 5 years and never had a problem with any of their strings. This is the page for their bulk bass strings: http://www.juststrings.com/bassguitarbulkstrings.html

Been getting mine from WebStrings.com for a few years now. Haven't found anyone that can beat their prices.

The bassist I play with at church said that he takes his strings off and boils them, and they sound as good as new. I don't know what kind of voodoo this is, but if it works...

It works to a point, gets the gunk out of the strings and with bass string the space between the wraps are pretty big so when you are done boiling, the pot is full of gunk and the strings are clean...but it changes the metal just a little each time you boil them. Consider you are heating the strings up to 220*+ when you boil, it caused the metals to expand and contract beyond their typical specs for normal use. I have found you can boil them once, but after that it makes little difference.

yep. every time i boiled my strings i broke them the next gig...

in saying that i went through a phase of breaking strings every 2nd gig...

yes. bass strings...the E string. i pick way too hard.

another trick is using crc to brighten them up a bit. but not right before you go on stage, your fingers will slip off the strings for the whole set.

Yep, boiling strings works, and postpones buying the next set- which always hurts, damn they're expensive...

Oh no! I've just outed myself as an occasional bassist
