Finally spent a little time learning how to use DIY layout creator...guess I can tick that one off the list too.
Any comments or tips appreciated- looking at it I can already see something that could be more elegant...

I had already built this, so I know it works- though in principle, untill someone else does I guess it's unverified.
Although it was called a Tonebender II, it's realy a Fuzz Face with a big input cap and smoothing caps.
Having built a few PNP negative ground pedals that nearly always gave me grief, I've become a big fan of these negative power ICs.

I have one of these built but I am not getting much more than splatty sounds. Can you suggest some gain ranges for the Q's?

The original transistor was AF 127, these were quite low gain (hfe 50+), so I'd go with any low leakage PNPs around 50-70, with the higher gain one at Q2.
With those input and output caps, expect it to sound pretty dark too.

That's awesome, i had a big batch of OC44 that i did'nt knew what to do with because of their low hfe....they'll be perfect for this..... 8)

Ben! you the man!

This thing sounds freaking great! 8)

Going to play with some cap values to get it a bit brighter.......but that's it.

Used OC44 of 40 and 42hfe.....with barely no leak, with C5 Fuzz pot........beastly........., a stoner's dream!

Omitting or lowering the 220pf cap will return some brightness, as would lowering the input and output caps. 4.7uf is pretty big compared to FF (2.2uf) The output cap at 0.1uf is 10x that of a FF too (0.01uf) FF has a 500k vol pot too, unless you're Eric Johnson, he likes 250K.
Might be worth trying a 50K Vol pot on the stock TBRI build too...
