To my untrained ear, it is not clear where the bias setting should be. Which of the following methods would be best:?
1) Start with trimmer fully ccw and adjust cw till it just starts to sound good,
2) Start with trimmer fully cw and adjust ccw till it just starts to sound good or
3) adjust the trimmer half-way between the two points from 1 and 2 above?

I use method 1. I've also found that the best compression happens within about the first quarter turn of the trimpot.

I mentioned this the other day after completing mine.

Firstly, I agree with SB.

Secondly, I made two attempts to get the bias right:
1) whacked the bias to a fairly central position...things seemed to work fine...BUT...the tell-tale compression was not really there
2) crept the pot up from CCW...the effect sparks into life (just slap an open string whilst tweaking) but it still needed more gain...so I crept around just a little more...bingo: orange juice all over the place!

The vid ( http://www.buildyourownclone.com/atvid6.html ) exemplifies the sound perfectly.

Check out the manual for Analogman's "Juicer"
http://www.analogman.com/manuals/
